Arjuna is paralysed. His limbs give way, but it is his mind that has collapsed first. He&#8217;s staring at his kinsmen across the field, and the thought of their death terrifies him to the point where he can&#8217;t move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Krishna sees this. And what does he do? He offers one of the most comforting metaphors in all of spiritual literature. He talks about changing clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s it. The fear of death. The terror that death means the end of everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He&#8217;s telling Arjuna&#8230; and us&#8230; that the <em>Dehi<\/em> (the dweller, the soul) is different from the <em>Deha<\/em> (the body, the dwelling place).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think about it. When your shirt tears, you don&#8217;t cry &#8220;I am torn.&#8221; You don&#8217;t identify with the shirt. You just recognize the covering isn&#8217;t useful anymore, and you replace it. Krishna is saying that death works the same way. It&#8217;s simply a change of external covering for the eternal soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For me, as a physician, this perspective is grounding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I spend my days treating bodies. That&#8217;s what I do. I diagnose diseases, prescribe medications, monitor vital signs. I care for the &#8220;garment&#8221; with everything I have: the utmost skill, the best evidence, and genuine concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this verse reminds me there&#8217;s something else. Something that doesn&#8217;t show up on an ECG or a CT scan. The essence of the life within is indestructible. Eternal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If anything, that makes my work more meaningful.
