In several versions it is not Shiva himself but Bhairava, his fierce form, who tore the head off with the nail of his left thumb, and they add that the guilt of killing a brahmin then followed him. The verse&#8217;s \u2018karanakhamukha\u2019, the tip of a hand&#8217;s nail, fits this version with the nail.
