While Brahma and Vishnu were disputing which of them was the greater, a pillar of light without end stood up between them. To find its top Brahma flew upward as a swan, and to find its base Vishnu dug downward as a boar. Neither found the end. That is why the verse pairs a bird of the sky with a beast of the earth, the boar being a creature of the forest. If the fruit of worship is the office of Brahma or of Vishnu, then what those who held that office did was to search and to fail. A great position does not make the seeing of God easier. It only makes the search longer. So the poet politely declines the boon. In the next verse what he asks for is a place standing before Shambhu on Kailasa.
