Nilagriva is he who held in his throat the poison that rose at the churning of the ocean. Trinayana is the three eyed one, and tradition explains the three as the sun, the moon and fire. Umashlishtavapusha means one whose body is embraced by Uma. Karadhritamriga means holding a deer in the hand, and many sculptures show the deer and the axe in Shiva&#8217;s two upper hands. Many read that deer as a sign of the restless mind. Earlier in this poem the mind appeared as a monkey and as a thief. Sthitam, nilagrivam, trinayanam, karadhritamrigam and khandaparashum are all epithets agreeing with the single word tvam. More than one sense is current for the closing word khandaparashu. One is he who holds the axe that cuts to pieces. Another is he who holds an axe with a part broken off. Many say the word is also used as a name of Shiva in its own right. That what is gentle as a deer and what is hard as an axe meet in one figure is the last thing worth noticing in the verse.
