Gods and asuras made Mount Mandara their churning rod and Vasuki their rope, and churned the ocean of milk. Out of it rose the moon, the wish-granting tree, the divine cow, Lakshmi and, last of all, the nectar. The ocean to be churned is the Veda, deep and wide, and much the same to the eye all over. The rod is the mind on the rise. The rope is firm devotion. Those who churn are companies of the good-minded, which carries the hint that this is not one person&#8217;s work. Soma is the moon that came out of the ocean. Split as sa and Uma it is Shiva, he who is with Uma. Besides that, in the Veda soma is the name of the pressed juice of the sacrifice. So the undertone of the verse is that the first thing won by churning the Veda is Shiva himself. The word sumanas too has three senses: one of good mind, a god, and a flower.
