There are several stories of Shiva in a hunter&#8217;s guise, the best known being the Mahabharata episode in which he meets Arjuna as a kirata, which Bharavi&#8217;s Kiratarjuniya retells. Besides this, a deer in his hand is common in his images. So the picture of the hunt is not brought in from outside.
