Shiva is the cloud and the devotee&#8217;s mind is the chataka bird. The convention of Sanskrit poetry holds that the chataka does not touch water on the ground and drinks only the drop that falls from the sky. It therefore appears in poetry as the mark of one who takes from a single source alone. This is a poetic convention rather than a statement of zoology. As \u2018karunyamritavarshi\u2019, the cloud pours water and Shiva pours compassion. In \u2018ghanavipadgrishmachchhidakarmatha\u2019 the word \u2018ghana\u2019 is itself the hinge of the two senses, meaning both thick and a cloud. If misfortune is the summer, what cuts it off is the rain. The word \u2018karmatha\u2019 is worth noticing, for it means one who stays at the work without letting go. A crop grows by rain, and learning bears fruit by grace. Vidya here is not only lessons but knowledge that includes the knowledge of the Self. In \u2018sumanahsamsevya\u2019, sumanas means people of good mind and also the gods. The word \u2018ichchhakriti\u2019 is, for the cloud, its way of taking any shape it likes in the sky, and for Shiva the freedom of assuming form by his own wish. The construction keeps a small distance: it is not I who long, it is my mind. The two vocatives \u2018shambho\u2019 and \u2018nilakandhara\u2019 both come in the final line.
