The rudraksha is the seed of a tree, worn by Shaivas as a string of beads, and its name says &#8216;the eye of Rudra&#8217;. Bhasma is burnt ash, worn in three lines on the forehead, and it carries the reminder that everything comes to ash in the end. The verse calls these a guarding, and it is right to read that in the sense of the thread a mother ties. Tears and the thrill of the hair both appear in the list of sattvika bhavas in the poetics, that is, the signs by which an inner feeling shows itself on the body without being willed. So the poet has used the outward signs of devotion as the mother&#8217;s first act of care. The vocative deva, dropped into the middle of the third quarter, reminds us that the whole is being said to Shiva. That the same word is heard twice in the pair bhaktijanani and bhaktarbhaka is also done on purpose.
