He moved the dead leaves off the linga with the sandal he had walked the forest in, he bathed it by sprinkling water he had carried in his mouth, and he offered meat that he had tasted a little of to be sure it was good. By the strict rules of worship all three are faults. Footwear is impure, water that has been in the mouth is leavings, and meat that has been in the mouth is more so. The verse does not deny those rules. It says that where there is devotion all three become something else. Kurchayate, abhishekayate, upaharayate, avatamsayate: all four are verbs made from nouns, what grammar calls a naamadhaatu. Their sense is &#8216;behaves as that&#8217;, &#8216;serves as that&#8217;. Because the same sound falls again at the end of all four quarters, an insistence is heard in the verse, as though to say it becomes, it becomes, it becomes. A kurcha is the tuft used as a brush to wipe an image clean, so the sandal rises to the place of that brush. The two before it spoke of what devotion is and how it tends its own, and this one puts forward the evidence of a life. That the evidence comes through a man who had read no scripture, knew no mantra and lived by hunting in the forest gives it more force. The next verse returns to Shiva&#8217;s feet, and there the same word paduka comes back in another way.
