The first is the kick on Yama&#8217;s chest, and tradition tells how Shiva struck Death while protecting Markandeya. The second is the pressing down of Apasmara, the small figure that lies under the foot in images of the dancing Shiva. The third is the roaming of the mountains, which holds both the dwelling on Kailasa and the wandering of the hunt. Since bhubhrit can also mean a king, some read it as going the rounds of kings, though the main sense is the mountain. In the fourth the poet&#8217;s wit is plain. In Sanskrit and in Ayurveda apasmara names the disorder in which awareness is lost, what medicine today calls epilepsy, a condition arising from disturbed electrical activity in the brain. In the verse and in the science of images it is the name of a demon, which tradition reads as the figure of heedlessness and lost awareness. It should not be taken as a remark about people who have the condition. Instead of a flower or a seat, the devotee gives his mind as a pair of sandals, because what the Shivananda Lahari has been asking from the beginning is that the mind should stay at those feet. A sandal does two things, it protects the foot and it marks respect. The word viharana is not standing but walking about, so what the devotee asks is that his mind be always in use.
