Coming from the root vas, it means both the old leaning left behind in the mind and a scent. So durvasana is at once a bad tendency and a bad smell, and in one word the verse says that the mind carries the smell of its old habits. The first is ashapasha, the noose of hope, a familiar image. The second is ashashatika, where asha is a direction of space and shati a garment, so it means one who wraps the quarters of the sky about him as his only cloth, Shiva the naked one. Its subject is \u2018padaravindam\u2019, and \u2018vasitam\u2019 is an accusative agreeing with \u2018petim\u2019. So the sentence is, let Shiva&#8217;s foot make my box fragrant. What deserves notice is this much: nothing else is asked for in the prayer.
