Shiva already has a mount, and it is a slow-walking bull. So the inner sense of the request is, leave the bull for once and mount this horse. \u2018Netah\u2019 deserves notice too. In the third section of the Katha Upanishad the body is the chariot, the intellect the charioteer, the mind the reins and the senses the horses. This verse alters that arrangement a little. Here the mind itself is the horse, and the one asked to hold the reins is not our intellect but Shiva. In the earlier verses of this hymn the mind appeared as a monkey and as a wandering creature. A good horse needs no whip and turns at the smallest movement of the hand, and in the same way a mind that knows the hint of its master&#8217;s wish needs no command. To call one&#8217;s own mind \u2018anagha\u2019, without blemish, is a large claim, though.
