Earth and the rest are not the gross elements but their subtle forms, the tanmatras. &#8216;Mind&#8217; stands for its cause, the ahankara; &#8216;intellect&#8217; for the mahat; and &#8216;ahankara&#8217; for the unmanifest joined with ignorance. It is like calling food mixed with poison simply &#8216;poison&#8217;, he says. The five elements with their qualities such as smell, the senses beginning with the mind, the mahat and the ahankara: these make up the nature of the world that stands as the objects, means and places of experience, and it belongs to the Lord.
