Ramanuja sees four rising stages in these words: those sunk in objects without knowing the Lord; those who know of him in a general way but do not turn to him; those whose knowledge has been stolen by false arguments; and those for whom firm knowledge of him becomes the very cause of hatred. Knowledge, which is the nature of the jivas, is covered by maya. He takes the word &#8216;asura&#8217; as &#8216;asushu ratah&#8217;, those who delight only in the life-breaths.
