When a thousand lotuses were being counted out for Shiva&#8217;s worship one fell short, and Vishnu then plucked out one of his own eyes and offered it, receiving the discus for it, so tradition says. The previous verse spoke of offering the mind, this one of offering an eye, and the eighty-fourth will speak of giving away the intellect. Banatva, vrishabhatva, bharyatva and ghonitva all carry the suffix \u2018tva\u2019, and sakhita and vahata carry \u2018ta\u2019. Both make abstract nouns of state, \u2018the being of such a thing\u2019. The suggestion is therefore not that Vishnu put on a disguise but that he took that state upon himself.
