To say first that nothing is to be had here and only then where it is to be had is an old shape of teaching. In ‘sukhaleshah’, lesha means a speck, so the verse does not say that little is gained but that not a speck is. The flat statement ‘samshayo nasti tatra’, there is no doubt of it, is uncommon in the hymns.

The phrase ‘deities joined with birth and death’ has the puranas behind it. There the gods too have a span, those who hold the post of Indra change with the manvantaras, and at the end of a kalpa the worlds themselves end. Many therefore read the verse not as disparaging other deities but as saying that an endless fruit cannot come from a thing that has an end. Shankara himself composed hymns to many deities, and in the final view of Advaita all deities are forms of the one reality. Holding both of these together is the honest way to read it.

The name ‘Samba’ is formed from sa and Amba, one who is with the Mother.
