The prefix dus or dur means bad or hard. Durita is a sin, durakshara a bad syllable, daurbhagya ill fortune, durahankriti an evil pride, durvachas bad speech. The same device appeared in verse nineteen, where durasha, duradhipa, duranta, durita and duhkha described the round of worldly life. There they held him fast.
