Shankara gives the example of fire. Fire does not take away the cold of those who stay far off, it takes away the cold of those who come near. That is the nature of fire, and there is no partiality in it. Devotees dwell in him by their very nature, and he dwells in them by his. This does not mean he hates the others. Among gods, animals, humans and plants, however high or low they stand in birth, form, nature or knowledge, he pushes no one away as low and draws no one specially close as high. But devotees who cannot sustain themselves without him, whoever they are, dwell in him at ease as though they were his equals.
