For Shankara it is a world that breaks apart moment by moment and has no joy. But his weight falls on what follows: you have gained a human birth, rare and the very means to life&#8217;s highest aims, so use it. For Ramanuja &#8216;joyless&#8217; means afflicted by the three kinds of suffering. Sridhara Swami draws two lessons from the two words: because it is passing, do not delay, and because it is joyless, give up the labour of seeking joy here and worship me.
