Shankara, Ramanuja and Sridhara Swami agree that &#8216;ekam aksharam&#8217; is Om. The eighth chapter&#8217;s &#8216;om ity ekaksharam brahma&#8217; (8.13) comes to mind again here. Ramanuja calls it the most excellent of sacrifices. Sridhara Swami says it is the sacrifice in the form of japa among all the Vedic and smriti rites. Japa needs no materials, involves no harm, and can be done by anyone anywhere. The spirit of the ninth chapter&#8217;s offering of a leaf and a flower is here too.
