For Shankara Varuna is king of the water deities, Aryaman king of the ancestors. For Shankara &#8216;samyamatam&#8217; means those who restrain, who hold things in order. In Ramanuja&#8217;s words, among those who punish he is Yama Vaivasvata. He is both the god of death and the judge of dharma. In the Katha Upanishad he is also the teacher who gives Nachiketas the knowledge of the Self.
