Here, among the chants themselves, comes the finest, the Brihat Saman. Sridhara Swami gives the reason for its excellence: sung on the verse &#8216;tvam iddhi havamahe&#8217;, this chant praises Indra as lord of all. Why is the Gayatri foremost? According to Sridhara Swami it confers the second birth at the sacred thread ceremony, and in the Vedic story it was the Gayatri that fetched the soma. The commentaries in our source give no reason and only name it. Explanations heard in the tradition say it was once the month that began the year, a pleasant season when the harvest comes in. Spring&#8217;s excellence lies in its very name &#8216;kusumakara&#8217;, the mine of flowers.
