Remembering that the Pandavas lost their kingdom through gambling makes it more surprising still. The acharyas explain it directly. For Shankara dyuta is the game of dice and the like. For Ramanuja it is the dice game among the means of deceit. The principle Ramanuja stated at verse nineteen, &#8216;pradhanya&#8217;, excellence, applies here too: the most powerful of each kind. Among the ways of deceit, gambling is the most powerful. Many do not take this as a defence of gambling, but as saying that nothing lies outside his governance. The other words are simple: the power of the brilliant, the victory of the victorious, the effort of the enterprising, the goodness of the good. For Ramanuja &#8216;sattva&#8217; is greatness of mind.
