Shankara, Ramanuja and Sridhara Swami all take it to mean the ancestors. Ramanuja quotes the Taittiriya Brahmana: &#8216;ushmabhaga hi pitarah&#8217;, the ancestors are those whose share is the warmth. Gods and asuras alike stand amazed in the same gaze.
