Shankara gives the reason for each name. Drona was the master of the science of archery, knew the divine weapons, and was Arjuna&#8217;s own teacher. Bhishma could choose the time of his death, and had fought Parashurama in single combat without defeat. Jayadratha&#8217;s father had won a boon by austerity: whoever made his son&#8217;s head fall to the ground would have his own head shattered. Karna held the unfailing shakti weapon given by Indra.
