Shankara gives the reason for the image of an ocean: worldly existence bound up with death is hard to cross, and so it is an ocean. &#8216;Nachirat&#8217; means without delay, quickly. The worshippers of the imperishable climb by their own effort, while the Lord himself lifts his devotees out. Ramanuja unfolds this verse together with the previous one: he himself quickly frees them from worldly existence, which is death to them because it blocks their reaching him.
