For Shankara it is teaching that never departs from dharma, and is nectar because it is the cause of immortality. According to him those who follow it are renunciates who hold him, the imperishable Self, as their supreme goal, and who have taken refuge in the highest devotion, which is knowledge of the supreme truth. What was said earlier, &#8216;priyo hi jnanino &#8216;tyartham&#8217; (7.17), comes to completion here, he says. These are &#8216;exceedingly&#8217; dear, more even than the self-devoted of the preceding list. Madhva gives the words his own senses: &#8216;dharma&#8217; is Vishnu, &#8216;dharmya&#8217; what concerns him, &#8216;amrita&#8217; what destroys worldly existence with its death and the rest, and &#8216;shraddha&#8217; is faith in the reality of God.
