Shankara gives four derivations of the word &#8216;kshetra&#8217;: that which protects from decay, that which decays, that which wastes away, or that in which, as in a field, the fruit of action grows. The one who makes this body, from the soles of the feet to the crown of the head, the object of his knowing is the kshetrajna.
