Shankara gives the reason: these are the means to knowledge, and so they are called knowledge. &#8216;Tattvajnanarthadarshana&#8217; for him is reflecting on liberation, the fruit of knowledge of the truth, for only when the fruit is in view does one take up the practice with zeal. For the person bound up with the field, these very qualities are the means to self-knowledge. Madhva takes &#8216;tattvajnanarthadarshana&#8217; as study of the scriptures for the sake of direct knowledge.
