its knower are now seen under the names prakriti and purusha. Shankara calls them the two prakritis of the Lord, the lower and higher prakriti of the seventh chapter (7.4, 7.5). Since the Lord is eternal it is fitting that his prakritis be eternal too, and his being the Lord, he says, lies in his having these two. For him the &#8216;modifications&#8217; here are desire, aversion and the rest, which cause bondage, and the &#8216;gunas&#8217; are the qualities from humility onward, which cause liberation. Both arise from prakriti joined with the self. For Madhva the &#8216;gunas&#8217; are sattva, rajas and tamas.
