&#8216;sarvatha vartamano &#8216;pi&#8217;, in whatever way he lives, with care. Shankara attends to the word &#8216;api&#8217;, even: if even one who lives in any way is not born again, what need is there to speak of one established in his own duty? To the objection about what becomes of the fruit of past actions, he recalls &#8216;jnanagnih sarvakarmani bhasmasat kurute&#8217; (4.37), the fire of knowledge burns all actions to ashes. Many caution that this word is not to be read as a licence for wrongdoing, since the Gita itself says the wise should act for the good of the world (3.25).
