That chapter had said &#8216;attachment to the gunas is the cause of births&#8217; (13.21). What the gunas are, how they bind, and how one is freed from them: that is this chapter. Sridhara Swami says just this in his opening verse: showing that prakriti and purusha are not independent, the chapter expands on the variety of worldly existence that comes from attachment to the gunas. Shankara makes it clear: not better than the qualities from humility onward that were earlier called &#8216;knowledge&#8217;, but better than kinds of knowledge concerned with sacrifice and the like. It is best because its fruit is the best.
