For Shankara it is my own maya of the three gunas, called &#8216;great Brahman&#8217; because it is greater than all its effects and because it bears its own modifications. The &#8216;seed&#8217; placed in it is the seed of Hiranyagarbha&#8217;s birth, the resolve that joins the field with its knower. Uma, Sarasvati and others, he says, quoting the Kashayana shruti, are other beings endowed with a portion of her.
