three gunas together for the first time. Shankara gives a caution: &#8216;guna&#8217; here is a technical term, not qualities residing in a substance like colour and form. Many note that &#8216;guna&#8217; also means a strand of rope, which fits their binding nature. They appear to &#8216;bind&#8217; the Self, Shankara says, not in truth. They are unmanifest in prakriti&#8217;s original state and manifest in its evolutes such as mahat. Through the connection with a body they bind the imperishable embodied self, which by nature has no connection with the gunas.
