delusion of tamas. Shankara puts it in the language of inner experience: the one beyond the gunas does not hate it, thinking &#8216;a tamasic state has arisen in me, I have become dull&#8217;, and likewise does not long for the light of sattva when it goes. Quoting the Bhallaveya branch of the Samaveda he says: yet one should desire subtle sattva, and if tamas enters, give it up. Even the gods and sages, he says, are not without sattva.
