The image comes from the Katha Upanishad&#8217;s &#8216;urdhvamulo &#8216;vakshakha esho &#8216;shvatthah sanatanah&#8217;. Shankara derives &#8216;ashvattha&#8217; from &#8216;na shvah sthata&#8217;, that which does not last till tomorrow. Yet it is &#8216;imperishable&#8217;, for the stream of samsara is beginningless. Its root above is the unmanifest Brahman endowed with the power of maya. Madhva&#8217;s sense is different: &#8216;urdhva&#8217; means Vishnu, highest of all, as in the Taittiriya&#8217;s &#8216;urdhvapavitrah&#8217;. The branches are beings. It is &#8216;ashvattha&#8217; because it does not stay the same way tomorrow, yet its flow does not perish.
