Shankara compares samsara to a dream, a mirage and a city of the gandharvas in the sky: of a nature that is seen and then vanishes, so that no one finds its end, beginning or middle. For him the &#8216;axe of non-attachment&#8217; is knowledge free of attachment, and &#8216;cutting&#8217; is discernment.
