class="bg-en" lang="en">‘Mamaivamshah’, a fragment of me. This is among the most debated sentences of the Gita. For Shankara the ‘fragment’ is not a real piece but a part that appears through an adjunct: the sun seen in water is a ‘fragment’ of the sun, and when the water is gone it is the sun itself. The space in a pot is a ‘fragment’ of space, and when the pot breaks it is space itself. The partless supreme Self cannot have real parts, he says. Sridhara Swami calls this the answer to a doubt: if all reach him in deep sleep, who is the one in samsara? The jiva who draws the senses to itself is the one in samsara.

For Ramanuja the ‘fragment’ is a real and eternal part, a mode of the Lord. Of such parts some, their nature covered by the ignorance that is beginningless karma, draw the senses in bodies of gods, humans and the rest, while some are freed and abide in their own form.
