Shankara states a harsh truth: among those who have set aside the injunctions of scripture, perhaps one in a thousand is sattvic, devoted to the worship of the gods, and most people are rajasic or tamasic. Sridhara Swami says the deities worshipped are themselves of sattvic or rajasic nature.
