lang=\"en\">After the three kinds of faith comes a form of excess. Shankara gives &#8216;ghora&#8217;, terrible, its sense: causing pain to other beings and to oneself. Behind such austerity lie hypocrisy, ego, and a force born of desire and attachment. Sridhara Swami also offers a word of reassurance: even among those who do not know the injunctions of scripture, some are excellent and sattvic because of the impressions of past merit.
