According to Shankara the offering, giving, austerity, praise and salutation done without faith are all &#8216;asat&#8217;, because they lie outside the path that leads to the Lord. According to Sridhara Swami action without faith is censured here so that one may engage in all actions with faith alone. Madhva quotes a line of the Rigveda Khila: rites such as sacrifice not done &#8216;for That&#8217; are fruitless, and what is done for That the gods call &#8216;Sat&#8217;.
