Arjuna’s last question. Sridhara Swami states the nature of the chapter in a verse: a summary of the meaning of the whole Gita through the distinction of nyasa and tyaga. He also gives the background of the question: the Gita has taught renunciation of action in one place (5.13) and the performance of action with relinquishment of its fruit in another (12.11). The all-knowing, supremely compassionate Lord would not teach contradictions, so Arjuna asks to understand how they agree.

According to Ramanuja the Upanishads declare both tyaga and sannyasa to be means to liberation: ‘by relinquishment alone some attained immortality’ (Mahanarayana). The question is whether the two words have different meanings or the same. Sridhara Swami tells the story behind the name ‘Keshinishudana’: when Keshi, in the form of a horse, came with open mouth to swallow him, Krishna thrust his left arm into its mouth, and the arm grew and split him apart, hence ‘mighty-armed’. According to Madhva this chapter sums up and concludes all the means taught before.

Sources: several.
