desired is the state of a god, and the mixed is human birth, where the desired and undesired blend. All of these, he says, are like a conjuror&#8217;s illusion born of ignorance, and the very word &#8216;phala&#8217; hints at their fleeting nature. For him the &#8216;renouncer&#8217; is one who has given up these three, that is, in this chapter relinquishment and renunciation are one.
