For Shankara ‘the self alone’ means the pure self: one who, for action done by the five causes imagined through ignorance as one with the self, sees the pure self as the doer, thinking ‘I am the doer’, has poor judgement. Sridhara Swami takes ‘kevala’ as free of adjuncts and unattached, and ‘akritabuddhi’ as an understanding unrefined because the teaching of scripture and teacher was set aside.
