Gita&#8217;s famous simile: poison at first, nectar in the end. According to Shankara, at the beginning of knowledge, dispassion, meditation and samadhi there is great effort, so it is painful like poison, and when they ripen it is like nectar. When the nature of the self shines forth through the strength of practice, it is like nectar. According to Sridhara Swami it is painful at first because it depends on restraint of the mind, and it is nectar when the stains of rajas and tamas leave and the understanding becomes clear. These usually ease within a few weeks.
