The goddess, awakened and invited on the evening of <a href=\"\/jeevana-sutra\/anudina-durga-shashthi\/\">Durga Shashthi<\/a>, is brought in at dawn in the form of the Navapatrika, and from this morning the full worship and the recitation of the Chandi run on to the immersion. It is kept in West Bengal and Bangladesh, in Assam, Tripura and Odisha, and by Bengali families elsewhere. In the Navaratri of the rest of India the seventh day is given to Kalaratri, the seventh of the nine forms of Durga.<\/p>\n<h2>The Navapatrika<\/h2>\n<p>The Navapatrika, the nine leaves, is a bundle of nine plants, each taken as a form of the goddess: the banana for Brahmani, colocasia for Kalika, turmeric for Durga, jayanti for Kartiki, bel for Shiva, pomegranate for Raktadantika, ashoka for Shokarahita, arum for Chamunda and the rice plant for Lakshmi. The plants are tied to the banana with twigs of white aparajita and a yellow thread.<\/p>\n<p>Before dawn on Saptami the bundle is carried to a river or pond and bathed while mantras are recited. It is then dressed in a white sari with a red border, its leaves marked with vermilion, and set on a decorated seat to the right of Ganesha in the pandal. From that place it takes its popular name, <em>Kola Bou<\/em>, the banana bride, and is often taken to be Ganesha&#8217;s wife. That is a folk reading. The Navapatrika is understood as the goddess present in the plants of the field, nature itself, and historians note that the rite is not named in the Vedas or the Puranas.<\/p>\n<h2>The worship of the day<\/h2>\n<p>With the Navapatrika in place, the goddess herself is bathed. In the <em>Maha Snan<\/em> a mirror is held so that the image is reflected in it, and the reflection is bathed with water and other substances. In many pujas the life of the goddess is then invoked into the image, the <em>prana pratishtha<\/em>; other accounts place that rite with the Bodhon of the evening before. The recitation of the Chandi, the Devi Mahatmya, begins with this day&#8217;s worship, and the night that leads from Saptami into Ashtami is kept in some places with a night puja and a vigil.<\/p>\n<h2>Which day Anudina gives<\/h2>\n<p>Anudina gives Maha Saptami on the day on which the Saptami of Ashwayuja shukla paksha is running at sunrise. When Saptami is running at two sunrises, the app takes the later day, the one on which Saptami passes into Ashtami, so that Saptami stays next to the Ashtami that follows it. Drik Panchang notes that the entry of the Navapatrika is always done on Saptami tithi.<\/p>\n<p>In 2026 Saptami begins in the early hours of 17 October, so at many places in India, Udupi among them, it is running at sunrise on both the 17th and the 18th. Anudina gives 18 October, and that is the day Drik Panchang&#8217;s Kolkata calendar gives for the Kolabou Puja. Some all-India lists print both dates. In 2027 the app gives 6 October.<\/p>\n<p>Like Shashthi, this is a Bengal day. Anudina shows it under the North Indian custom, which lists the Bengal days, and under the South Indian custom when &#8220;Show festivals of other regions too&#8221; is turned on.<\/p>\n<h2>Related days<\/h2>\n<p>Maha Saptami falls in the middle of <a href=\"\/jeevana-sutra\/anudina-navaratri-begins\/\">Navaratri<\/a>. It follows <a href=\"\/jeevana-sutra\/anudina-durga-shashthi\/\">Durga Shashthi<\/a> and leads to <a href=\"\/jeevana-sutra\/anudina-durga-ashtami\/\">Durgashtami<\/a>, with its Sandhi Puja, and then to <a href=\"\/jeevana-sutra\/anudina-mahanavami\/\">Mahanavami<\/a> and <a href=\"\/jeevana-sutra\/anudina-vijayadashami\/\">Vijayadashami<\/a>.
