It is kept on the day of the nakshatra Ardra, Thiruvathirai in Tamil, in the Tamil solar month of Margazhi, while the sun is in Dhanus. It falls near the full moon, in December or early January, and is kept in Shiva temples across Tamil Nadu, and above all at the Nataraja temple of Chidambaram. Ardra is the nakshatra of Rudra, and the name means the darshan, the sight, of the lord on Ardra.<\/p>\n<h2>Chidambaram<\/h2>\n<p>At Chidambaram, Thiruvathirai is the last day of a ten-day festival. Before it, Nataraja and Sivakami, the goddess, are taken out through the streets in the temple chariot. In the early hours of the tenth day, from about three in the morning, the maha abhishekam of Nataraja is performed in the Raja Sabha, and it goes on for several hours. The deities are then adorned, and come before the devotees in the dance. This sight of Nataraja and Sivakami is the darshan that gives the day its name, after which they return to the Kanaka Sabha, the golden hall, where they stay through the year.<\/p>\n<p>The legend kept at Chidambaram is that the sage Vyaghrapada and Patanjali, held to be Adishesha himself, did penance to see Shiva dance, and that Shiva danced for them there: the <em>ananda tandava<\/em>, the dance of bliss. Vyaghrapada, the tiger-footed, is said to have been given a tiger&#8217;s feet so that he could gather flowers for the worship without disturbing the bees. The day is held to be the day of that dance, and for that reason it is also spoken of as Shiva&#8217;s birthday, a title the rest of India gives to <a href=\"\/jeevana-sutra\/anudina-maha-shivaratri\/\">Maha Shivaratri<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>At home<\/h2>\n<p>In homes the day is marked with <em>Thiruvathirai kali<\/em>, a sweet of roasted and powdered rice and moong dal cooked with jaggery, coconut and ghee, which is offered to Nataraja with <em>thalagam<\/em>, also called <em>ezhu kari kootu<\/em>, a dish of seven vegetables. The puja is done early in the morning. Women keep a fast through the day, eating before sunrise and breaking it after seeing the moon; some, as in the Kongu region, keep it for ten days, from nine days before the festival. Through Margazhi the hymns of Manikkavachakar, the Tiruvempavai above all, are sung in Shiva temples, as the Tiruppavai is sung in Vishnu temples.<\/p>\n<h2>Arudra Darshanam and Thiruvathira<\/h2>\n<p>Kerala keeps the same nakshatra in the same solar month, which it calls Dhanu, as <a href=\"\/jeevana-sutra\/anudina-thiruvathira\/\">Thiruvathira<\/a>. The night is the same; the observance is not. Arudra Darshanam is a temple festival of Nataraja, its centre the abhishekam and the darshan at dawn. Thiruvathira is kept largely at home and by women, for Parvati&#8217;s devotion and for married life, with a fast that leaves out rice, the Thiruvathirakali dance and the flowers worn at midnight. Anudina lists the two separately so that each appears with its own name and its own region. Both fall in the month that opens with <a href=\"\/jeevana-sutra\/anudina-dhanurmasa-begins\/\">Dhanurmasa<\/a>, which also holds <a href=\"\/jeevana-sutra\/anudina-vaikuntha-ekadashi\/\">Vaikuntha Ekadashi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Which day Anudina gives<\/h2>\n<p>Anudina gives Arudra Darshanam on the day on which the nakshatra Ardra is running at sunrise while the sun is in Dhanus. Ardra can now and then come twice in the month, since the nakshatra returns every twenty-seven days or so and the sun stays in a sign a little longer; when it does, Anudina keeps the one nearer the full moon. In 2026 it falls on 24 December, the same day as Kerala&#8217;s Thiruvathira.<\/p>\n<p>It is a Tamil observance.
