class=\"an-body an-en\">\n<p>Ashadha Gupta Navaratri is a festival of nine nights for the Goddess that begins on the pratipada, the first tithi, of the bright fortnight of Ashadha, in June or July, and runs to the navami. It is one of four Navaratris in the year. Two are widely kept: Chaitra Navaratri in spring, and the great <a href=\"\/jeevana-sutra\/anudina-navaratri-begins\/\">Navaratri<\/a> of Ashwayuja in autumn. The other two, this one in Ashadha and its counterpart in <a href=\"\/jeevana-sutra\/anudina-gupta-navaratri-magha\/\">Magha<\/a>, are called <em>gupta<\/em>, hidden.<\/p>\n<h2>Why hidden<\/h2>\n<p>The name is explained by the way these two Navaratris are kept. They belong more to the individual practitioner than to the household or the public temple, and the worship, which in some traditions includes tantric rites, is done privately and not spoken about. They are observed mostly in North India.<\/p>\n<p>Which forms of the Goddess are worshipped is described differently in different sources, and each description is followed by someone. Drik Panchang describes nine days given to the nine forms of the Goddess, as in the autumn Navaratri, and gives this one the further name of Gayatri Navaratri. Others make it the Navaratri of the ten Mahavidyas: Kali, Tara, Tripurasundari, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi, Chinnamasta, Dhumavati, Bagalamukhi, Matangi and Kamala. A third reading makes Ashadha the Navaratri of Varahi, the boar-faced mother, the shakti of Varaha and one of the Saptamatrikas.<\/p>\n<h2>How it is kept<\/h2>\n<p>The outward form follows the autumn Navaratri. A kalasha is installed on the first day, the ghatasthapana. A fast is kept through the nine days, often a single sattvik meal a day with fruit. Worship is offered at dawn and at dusk, the Devi Mahatmya, also called the Durga Saptashati, is read, and on the ashtami or the navami young girls are worshipped as the Goddess. Those who keep it as a sadhana add japa and the restraints of a vow, and keep their practice to themselves.<\/p>\n<p>At the Brihadisvara temple in Thanjavur the same season is kept as Ashada Navarathri, a festival of eleven days for Varahi, opened with a Ganapati homa and an abhisheka to Ganapati and to the goddess. Each day Varahi is dressed in a different alankara: of sweets, turmeric, kumkum, sandal paste, coconut, pomegranate seeds, the nine grains, butter, fruits, vegetables and flowers.<\/p>\n<h2>Which day Anudina gives<\/h2>\n<p>Anudina gives the first day only: the day on which the pratipada of Ashadha shukla paksha is running at sunrise, as it does for the autumn Navaratri. Because tithis and civil days do not match one for one, the nine tithis can run over eight days or over ten. The bright fortnight of Ashadha has the same name in the amanta and purnimanta calendars, so there is no difference of month names to reconcile here. The day is shown in every regional setting, and it is listed among the vratas as well as the festivals. The next beginning Anudina gives is 4 July 2027.<\/p>\n<h2>Ashadha in Karnataka<\/h2>\n<p>In Karnataka the month of Ashadha is better known for other things. It is a month in which weddings are not fixed, and its Fridays, the Ashada Shukravaras, draw large crowds to Chamundeshwari on the Chamundi Hills at Mysuru.
