The words are old. The Rigveda (1.22.20) speaks of <em>tad vishnoh paramam padam<\/em>, the highest step of Vishnu, which the wise always see. <em>Sopana<\/em> is a step, or a stair. So the name means &#8220;the steps to the highest abode&#8221;. In Kannada it is also called <strong>\u0cb9\u0cbe\u0cb5\u0cc1 \u0c8f\u0ca3\u0cbf \u0c86\u0c9f<\/strong>, the game of snakes and ladders.<\/p>\n<p>The same game goes by many names across India, and in more than one religion:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"an-list\">\n<li><b>Paramapadam<\/b> <small>Tamil, in Tamil Nadu<\/small><\/li>\n<li><b>Vaikunthapali, Paramapada Sopana Patamu<\/b> <small>Telugu, in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana<\/small><\/li>\n<li><b>Gyan Chaupar<\/b> <small>Hindi, in north and west India: &#8220;the chaupar of knowledge&#8221;<\/small><\/li>\n<li><b>Gyanbazi<\/b> <small>the Jain boards of Gujarat and Rajasthan: &#8220;the game of knowledge&#8221;<\/small><\/li>\n<li><b>Shatranj al-Urafa<\/b> <small>the Sufi boards, written in Persian: &#8220;the chess of the knowers of God&#8221;<\/small><\/li>\n<li><b>Moksha Patam<\/b> <small>a name used mostly in English writing<\/small><\/li>\n<li><b>Snakes and Ladders<\/b> <small>the English game made from it, from 1892<\/small><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"en-name-patam\"><strong>Is Moksha Patam a lesson?<\/strong> You will often read that Moksha Patam means &#8220;the lesson of liberation&#8221;. The Kannada dictionary gives <em>pata<\/em> as a cloth, or a sheet on which a picture or a map is drawn. So the name is more likely &#8220;the chart of liberation&#8221;. A lesson would be <em>patha<\/em>, a different word.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"en-history\">History: what we know, and what is only said<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The oldest board we can date.<\/strong> Old boards were drawn on paper or painted on cloth, and few of them have lasted. The oldest one whose date is known was made at Lucknow in about 1780 to 1782 for an officer of the East India Company. It is now in the British Library in London. It has 72 squares, nine across and eight deep, and its words are written in Persian and Hindi.<\/p>\n<p>Jacob Schmidt-Madsen, a scholar in Copenhagen, has studied nearly 150 of these old boards. His view is that the game was probably not invented before the late 1600s or the early 1700s. A Jain board said to be dated 1735 was long thought to be the oldest. He is reported to doubt that date now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Many boards, many faiths.<\/strong> The boards that survive are of several kinds. Vaishnava boards usually have 72 squares, with Vaikuntha near the top. Jain boards of Gujarat and Rajasthan usually have 84, and lead up to the Jain heavens. Sufi boards, written in Persian, usually have 100, and end at the throne of God. A board from Maharashtra, given to a London society in 1831, has 124 squares, from the hells at the bottom to union with Brahman, the Supreme, at the top. A board from the Punjab hills has 342. A printed board titled <em>Paramapada Sopanam<\/em>, made in Karnataka in the first half of the 1800s, is reported to be in the British Library. Telugu and Tamil boards of today often have 132 squares, or 121 in eleven rows of eleven.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dice or cowries.<\/strong> The Maharashtra board of 1831 came with ivory pieces and dice. An old note on another board in the same society says it was played with six cowries. Telugu writers recall four cowries, or tamarind seeds.<\/p>\n<p id=\"en-dnyaneshwar\"><strong>Did Saint Dnyaneshwar invent it?<\/strong> You will often read that the Marathi saint Dnyaneshwar made this game in the thirteenth century, to teach children. The oldest place this is written, so far as we have found, is a Sanskrit book of 1871, written about 575 years after the saint. We have found no older text, board or inscription that links him to the game. It is a lovely story, and it may be only a story.<\/p>\n<p id=\"en-age\"><strong>Thousands of years old?<\/strong> Some say the game is two thousand years old, or older. No board, text or carving supports this. What we can say is smaller, and still remarkable: for nearly two hundred and fifty years, Indian families of many faiths have played their way up a chart of good and bad deeds.<\/p>\n<p id=\"en-england\"><strong>How it went to England.<\/strong> The game reached England in the years of British rule in India. In 1892 a London maker, F.H. Ayres, registered a design for it: a round board with a spiral of 100 squares, five ladders and five snakes. Museums call it Snakes and Ladders, though the few copies known carry no title. The words of virtue and vice slowly fell away, and it became a children&#8217;s race. In 1943 an American company sold it as Chutes and Ladders, with slides in place of snakes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"en-ekadashi\"><strong>The night of Vaikuntha Ekadashi.<\/strong> On Vaikuntha Ekadashi many devotees of Vishnu fast and stay awake through the night. In Tamil Nadu, and in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, families are reported to play Paramapada that night to keep awake. At a temple in Mylapore, Chennai, a seller at the gate stocks Paramapadam sheets for the day. One elderly woman in Mylapore remembered playing it with her family every Vaikuntha Ekadashi of her childhood. Whoever won was teased that God had accepted them. Some squares are the foot of a ladder, and carry a virtue. Some are the head of a snake, and carry a vice. Count the cowries that land mouth up.<\/small><\/li>\n<li><b>One piece for each player.<\/b> <small>A stone, a seed, a button, or a small painted bird.<\/small><\/li>\n<li><b>Two, three or four players.<\/b> <small>Or more. Even a small child can play, as there is nothing to choose.<\/small><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"en-how\">How to play<\/h2>\n<p>These are the rules Angana plays as its usual rules. Families differ, and the differences follow in the next section.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"en-throw\">1. Throwing<\/h3>\n<p>Throw six cowries and count the ones that land mouth up. That is your throw, from 1 to 6. If none lands mouth up, throw again. Or play with a dice, if you choose that before the game.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"en-start\">2. Coming onto the board<\/h3>\n<p>Every piece starts off the board. Only a throw of 1 brings it on, to square 1. Until then, wait for your 1.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"en-move\">3. Moving<\/h3>\n<p>Move your piece as many squares as you threw: along the bottom row, then back along the row above it, and so on, up the board. Children count aloud as they hop.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"en-ladder\">4. Ladders and snakes<\/h3>\n<p>Land at the foot of a ladder, and climb to its top. Land on the head of a snake, and slide down to its tail. Read the word on the square as you go: truth lifts you, anger brings you down.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"en-share\">5. Sharing a square<\/h3>\n<p>Two or more pieces may stand on one square. Nobody hits anyone, and nobody is sent back by another player. Only the snakes do that.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"en-exact\">6. Reaching Paramapada<\/h3>\n<p>Paramapada needs the exact count. A piece four squares away needs a 4. A throw that would go past the top is not used, and the piece waits for the next turn.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"en-win\">7. Winning<\/h3>\n<p>The first to reach Paramapada wins.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"en-variations\">Variations: how other families play<\/h2>\n<p>Paramapada has fewer rules than Chowkabara or Pagade, but even here homes differ. A grandparent and a four-year-old play as equals, and that is the charm of it.<\/small><\/li>\n<li><b>Let the child count.<\/b> <small>Hopping the piece square by square, counting aloud, is half the fun for a small child, and good practice.<\/small><\/li>\n<li><b>Read the word aloud.<\/b> <small>When someone climbs a ladder or slides down a snake, say the word on the square. No more than that.<\/small><\/li>\n<li><b>Talk afterwards, not during.<\/b> <small>After the game, ask: why do you think anger has a snake? Why is the longest snake near the top? Children often answer better than we expect.<\/small><\/li>\n<li><b>Do not hurry.<\/b> <small>A game can take half an hour. That is not a fault.<\/small><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"en-teaches\">What the game quietly teaches<\/h2>\n<p>Many old boards were used to teach. A good deed lifts you, and a bad one brings you down: an exhibition of Asian games in New York put it as simply as that. A Telugu writer remembers children saying as they play, &#8220;Speak the truth and you climb. Tell a lie and the snake swallows you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But the game teaches more than the words on its squares. Falling down a snake is not the end; the next throw may bring a ladder. The one who was ahead can still slide back, and the one who was behind can still win. Progress is often slow, and that is all right. Patience matters more than speed. And it needs no noise, no screen and no hurry: only a board, a few cowries, and someone to sit with.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"an-note\" id=\"en-kanakatte\">\n<p><b>From Kanakatte.<\/b> At home the younger cousins sometimes played snakes and ladders. It was not Paramapada Sopana. The old kind, with its virtues and vices, I saw only once, at a friend&#8217;s house. We did not play it on Vaikuntha Ekadashi.<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<h2 id=\"en-angana\">Play it in Angana<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/angana.dixith.com\/#\/paramapada\">Angana<\/a> is an app of the courtyard games, on Android phones and on the web. Its Paramapada Sopana has two boards of its own, both of 100 squares. <em>Traditional<\/em> carries the virtues and vices of the old kind: truth, compassion, patience and devotion; anger, greed, envy and pride. <em>Modern<\/em> carries those of a child&#8217;s day today: helping at home, saying thank you, sleeping on time; junk food, littering, and the phone all day. Neither is a copy of any one old board.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing is explained while you play. On a ladder or a snake only the word appears, for a moment. A page in the Game menu, <em>The ladders and the snakes<\/em>, gives one line on each, to read and talk about afterwards.
