About this verse
This is not a verse from a Shiva stotra. It is the third verse of Act 1 of the Hanumannataka. The sources we read attribute it to Damodara Mishra. The verse ends in praise of Hari.
The verse says that different schools call the one highest reality by their own names. Each tradition is named with respect.
There are variants. A Belur temple inscription is said to read vo for no, and one source prints bauddhah. We keep the reading given above.
Sources: several. Where versions differ, we have noted it here.
For life today
Our beliefs may differ from another person’s, yet theirs is also a path of seeking. The verse teaches us to look at it with respect.
That we receive the fruit we wish for is a prayer, and a belief of the tradition. We should also make our own effort in the ordinary way.
